Civic Center project wins award for innovative energy technology.
Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 3:35 a.m. ENCINITAS — Encinitas has received an international award for an innovative “ice-cooling” system that is expected to reduce the Civic Center's energy bills and effect on the power grid. This month, the Association of Energy Engineers named the Encinitas Civic Center project its 2009 Renewable Energy Project of the Year. The project also has received the San Diego Excellence in Energy award from the California Center for Sustainable Energy. The Civic Center at 505 S. Vulcan Ave. uses ice-cooling technology to reduce demand for energy during peak periods. The hybrid cooling system makes and stores ice at night, a time when utility rates are less expensive. The ice cooling is part of the city's $3.5 million energy improvements project at City Hall, which also incorporated 501 solar panels on the Civic Center roof. The improvements were completed last year. The retrofit was handled by PE Consulting and Xnergy. The project incorporates CALMAC's IceBank energy storage tanks and Trane's cool-water system. The project was partially funded through rebates and incentives from the California Solar Initiative and local utilities.
